THE BIGGEST BULLSHIT QUOTE SINCE BUSH
CALLED HIMSELF A "COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVE"

Taken from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) website:

"Though it would appear that record companies are still making their money and that artists are still getting rich, these impressions are mere fallacies."

Some of the artists who weren't "still getting rich" in 2002, and the petty cash that they earned*:

Paul McCartney - 72.1 million (2.2 million from publishing)

The Rolling Stones - 44 million (2.2 million from publishing)

Dave Matthews Band - 43.4 million (2.5 million from publishing)

Britney Spears - 9.1 million (1 million from publishing)

How could someone make only 2.2 million in a year from publishing and still bring in 72.1 million dollars total during the same year, you ask?  Because FANS pay for their (way overpriced) tours, their (way overpriced) merchandise and, did I mention their (way overpriced) tours?  A lot of these fans don't even buy the musician's albums.  They borrow them from a friend, they tape a copy, they even burn a few of their CDs.  CD sales hardly make a dent in the pocketbooks of RIAA musicians.  Why?  Because the RIAA and the monopolistic major labels take most of the money any CD, cassette and album brings in.  The system is screwed up, and the RIAA isn't fighting to protect the "artist."  They're fighting to protect the gigantic corporations who don't give a damn about art, just how much money they can make from it.  Support artists!  Take the money and give it to the musicians, not crazed corporate lawyers and lobbyists.  It's arguable that bands make MORE money due to fans trading songs and CDs.  As a matter of fact, I'd guess that if someone did a study on it, it would turn out to be a fact that musicians make their money from touring and merchandise, not record sales.  I would bet this to be fact long before people started downloading music.  The more people that hear a musician's work, the more people buy a ticket to the musician's concert.  THIS is where the musician actually makes his or her money.  A record or CD has never been much more than a way to promote a world tour.  The only other thing it does is make some slobby corporation a fortune.  Where would you rather have your money go?  Into the hands of an artist or into the hands of some massive multi-national corporate disaster?  Attend concerts, buy INDEPENDENT records and CDs.  BOYCOTT ANY CD RELEASED ON A LABEL REPRESENTED BY THE RIAA!
